Is it time to go home?

Many of us feel a calling, sometimes it’s hard to describe, sometimes all we know is we want to go ‘home’.  But where is home?  This can be the calling to a more spiritual life, for some it is a calling to reconnect with their ancestors.  For example, Irish-Americans make up the second largest immigrant population in the United States. There are over 35 million people in the US who claim Irish heritage, while Ireland itself has a population of 4.8 million.  As descendants of immigrants over multiple generations, how much has been lost?  Pilgrimage can be about coming back to the land and knowledge of our ancestors.

In the US we struggle with our identity as westerners.  We are a people at odds with our own history. A story of the greatest ideals a country could aspire towards, blighted by the parallel history of genocide and domination.  Irish folk immigrated to the US for a multitude of reasons, not the least of which being famine and displacement. There are stories of how our ancestors were murdered for the same reasons first nations people were massacred across the globe – for our connection to the Natural World and the wisdom with which we walked the Earth.  Not unlike first nations of other continents which we generally associate with having red, brown and black skin, the Irish have their own sacred teachings. Our ancestors understood the 4 Directions and their place in the universe. They prayed at sacred wells and they kept sacred fires burning for centuries on end.
